FIG 5.87 Young woman jumping
forward from a standing start.
Striking
Striking actions may involve an impact with a part of the body such as the hand,
fist, foot, elbow, knee, or head, in which case the power of the blow is delivered
through that part of the body. A striking action may also involve the use of
an object such as a bat, racket, stick, sword, or club, in which case the point of
contact is located outside and beyond the body. Depending on the nature of
the object used, it may be possible to exert a great deal more force to the blow.
When we strike a ball using a tennis racket, the point of contact is beyond
the reach of the arm; as such the swing carries greater force at the point of
contact. Likewise, it is the length of the golf club and the arc described by the
head of the club as it swings around toward the ball that enables a great deal
of force to be imparted to the ball on contact.
FIG 5.88 Striking sequence.
Backhand action.
