Carrying loads on the back may enable greater loads to be carried, but
in order to maintain stability during locomotion under such a load the
figureĀ is thrown forward slightly to place the weight into a more central
position.

Asymmetrical loading on one side of the body may result in a
compensatory shift in the body to maintain balance, which also creates
a more efficient and less strenuous way of carrying the load. This may
include carrying heavy weights on one shoulder or carrying a weight with
one arm.
