In-Depth Information
This may require a short step to widen the stance. Once the figure has lifted
the weight, it can be seen that the figure is shifted in such a manner that it
achieves greater stability around a center of gravity that takes into account
both the figure and the object.
Lifting a Light Weight
When a figure undertakes the lifting of a light object, there is often less need
to use the entire body as a counterweight and the action may be achieved
with the use of arms alone. Because there may be less strain placed on the
lower back, the angle of the torso can be held in a less upright position.
FIG 5.64 Sequence of a young
woman lifting a light object from the
ground.
Phase One: Preparatory Phase
Any shifting of the body's position in relation to the object may be
undertaken not in preparation for taking on the additional weight or to avoid
creating additional strain on the body during the lift but rather to simply
gain a better hold on the object. Naturally this depends on the shape and
size of the object. Moving in preparation just to take hold of an object is very
different from a movement that is undertaken to take on large additional
weights.
