An Elderly Walk
The elderly often have issues with walking that are very similar to the issues
young children face. They may experience difficulty with balance and often
lack confidence. Frailty and ill health may affect an individual's strength,
resulting in a much slower walk with a much shorter stride length and slower
frequency of stride. The surface on which an elderly person walks becomes a
far more important factor affecting the gait; any uneven or slippery surface
can result in additional anxiety and therefore add to the cautious nature of the
action. This uncertainty changes the gait, slows the walk, and further shortens
the stride. The knees are often slightly bent, and the figure may increasingly
be held in a hunched posture. The hands are often placed on any available
firm surfaces to provide additional support and aid balance. The stride is
