In-Depth Information
one carrying a light one. The physical implications of carrying a heavy weight
may be evidenced in a change to the figure's gait; the length of the stride
during walking may shorten and the muscles of the arms may be seen to
bulge under the additional tension. Tendons in the neck may tense, and there
may even be signs of stress and tension within the facial muscles. The speed
of locomotion may slow with the increase in weight, and the striding action
during locomotion may become jerky.
FIG 5.23 Figures carrying heavy
loads.
It is not only when a body is under additional stress due to heavy weights that
a gait will be altered. Carrying a light load may also result in a figure adapting
an unusual gait to effectively undertake the action. Rather than the additional
weight, this change may be a matter of balance in an effort to maintain stability.
