The Transverse or Horizontal Plane
The transverse or horizontal plane divides the figure in half horizontally into
upper and lower halves.
Each of these separate planes passes through the center of gravity at some
point. The point at which these three planes intersect is the center of gravity
in the figure. However, although this center of gravity representing the point
of balance in any object may be easily located in a figure at rest, this point will
shift as the object or figure shifts and moves its position throughout any given
action.
FIG 5.14 Center of gravity within a
figure at rest with different orientations.
As we can see in our series of images of a figure at rest with different
orientations along the three different planes, the center of gravity is clearly
located in different regions of the figure. Balance is achieved in the figure at
rest by the offsetting of body mass to ensure that equal amounts of body
mass are located equally on either side of the planes.
