of leg actions as a horse does. Pacing occurs when the animal needs to move
faster; it is an action that is possible only at higher speed because it involves
lateral pairing of legsā€”that is, legs on the same side of the body moving
together in phase and being lifted at the same time. The action alternates
from the left and right sides of the body with the right fore and right hinds
moving in unison, followed by left front and left hind.
If this were done at slow speeds, it would probably be impossible to maintain
balance. This pacing kind of action is suited to animals with very long legs and
is also occasionally used by giraffes.
Jumping
The ability for any given animal to jump, as with all forms of locomotion,
is synonymous with that animal's need to jump. For a few heavier animals
