Victoria O'Campo
Victoria O'Campo was a maverick in the
Modernist Movement, a female Maxwell
Perkins in her ability to find talent and pro-
mote it. From an immensely wealthy fam-
ily, she used that fortune to pursue her
great love, publishing. She became an ar-
dent publisher of Argentine literature in
her own country and abroad. Sur , her liter-
ary review, was among the first to introduce
the writings of Borges and Sabato.
There are hundreds of bookstores in Buenos
Aires, several open 24 hours (sheer heaven for
vacationing bookworms). Many are on
Corrientes, including shops featuring imported
topics. The publishing industry is alive and
kicking in Argentina, one of the three biggest
such industries in the Spanish-speaking world.
