( a ) The whip-and-tongue graft is most suitable when the stock and
scion are less than 25 mm in diameter. A flat slanting cut is made at
the basal end of the scion and a downward pointing tongue (A) made
in the apical part of this slanting surface. An upward slanting cut of
corresponding length is made through the stock and an upward
pointing tongue (B) made in this. The cut surfaces of stock and scion
are placed together so that the tongues interlock (D) and the cambial
regions (C) are in contact over as great a length as possible. If the
