A Day in the Oude
Zijde
Morning
As the Oude Kerk does
not open until 11am, start
your day with a tour of the
Museum Amstelkring (see
pp20-1) . Although in the
Nieuwe Zijde, it is only a
few steps from the Oude
Kerk (see pp28-9) , which
you can visit afterwards.
Then walk to Nieuwmarkt
(see p77) for a break at In
de Waag (Nieuwmarkt 4),
where you can sit outside
in summer and watch the
bustle of the square.
Montelbaanstoren
A fortified tower, the
Montelbaanstoren was built in
1512 on the eastern edge of
Amsterdam, just outside the city
wall. Its original purpose was to
defend the Dutch fleet; now,
more prosaically, it houses the
Amsterdam water authority. The
open-work steeple was added by
the ubiquitous Hendrick de
Keyser in 1606, when the city
fathers felt that they could at last
afford the icing on the cake. It
overlooks the lovely Oude
Schans (see p64) , a canal that
also dates from the early 16th
century, dug to improve access
for ships. d Oude Schans 2 Map R3
Afterwards, make your way
to Oudezijds Achterburgwal
for the Hash Marijuana
Hemp Museum . Then
follow the main drag of the
Red Light district (see
p77) , Oudezijds
Voorburgwal, as far as Café
Roux (see p60) for lunch.
Afternoon
Walk down to peaceful
Grimburgwal and the
House on the Three Canals.
Agnietenkapel (now
closed) is a few doors
away. From here, head
east to Oudezijds Achter-
burgwal and cut through
Oudemanhuispoort (stone
spectacles mark the
entrance), browsing
through the second-hand
bookstalls as you go.
Continue to Jodenbree-
straat and the Museum
Het Rembrandthuis (see
p77) . After your tour - if it
is a Monday, Wednesday
or Friday - pop into
Pintohuis (see p44) for a
glimpse of the painted
ceiling. Revive yourself in
Café de Sluyswacht (see
p80) . From here there is a
lovely canalside walk, past
the Montelbaanstoren .
Turn left and stroll along
Binnenkant before heading
back to your hotel.
