Top 10 Tips for
Cycling in Amsterdam
Stick to the Rules
Don't copy the locals, who
frequently jump red lights and
ride on sidewalks.
Stay in the Cycle
Lanes
Amsterdam has an excellent
integrated network of
fietspaden (cycle lanes), with
white lines, cycle signs and
dedicated traffic lights.
Prinsengracht
At 3 km (2 miles), the
outermost canal of the Grachten-
gordel (see p8) is quite tiring on
foot, but makes a very pleasant,
fairly car-free cycle ride, with
plenty of cafés at which to rest
along the way.
Cross Tramlines with
Care
If you have to, cross tramlines
at an angle, to avoid your
front wheel getting stuck.
Western Islands
Perhaps the most peaceful
part of Amsterdam in which to
walk or cycle lies to the north-
west of Centraal Station. The
islands of Prinseneiland,
Bickerseiland and Realeneiland,
together known as the Western
Islands, have a remote, bracing
quality, with well-worn boatyards
and white drawbridges, as well
as modern housing (see p93) .
Avoid Trams
They are bigger than you,
and can't be steered; listen
for their rattle and stay clear.
Watch for Pedestrians
It's usually tourists who
mistakenly walk in cycle
lanes; keep an eye out for
parked cars, too.
Give Priority
Motorists and cyclists
have priority when entering
your road from the right.
Amsterdamse Bos
This attractive wooded park
south of the city is ideal for
cyclists, thanks to 48 km
(30 miles) of cycle path; those
on foot have no less than 160
km (100 miles) of footpath to
stroll along. Perfect for a family
picnic outing (see p128) .
Dismount at Busy
Junctions
Unless you are really
confident, it's better to
negotiate these on foot.
Don't Cycle Two-
Abreast
It's only allowed if you are
not obstructing the traffic;
otherwise, stay in single file.
Use Lights
By law, you must turn
your lights on after dusk -
you must also have reflector
bands on both wheels.
Lock Your Bike
Bicycle theft is rife. Make
sure that you always lock both
front wheel and frame to an
immovable object.
