In-Depth Information
Het
Muziektheater
The Dutch royals
regularly pop in to
catch shows at this
comfortable - and
once controversial -
modern theatre,
which is home to the
Netherlands Opera
and Ballet companies
(see p78) . Tickets for shows -
particularly opera - can sell out
months in advance, so it's
advisable to book before you
travel if you want to go. Inspired
programming gives contemporary
culture vultures an occasional
look-in - Icelandic songstress
Björk even played here once. d

Felix Meritis
Felix Meritis
In 1777, the Felix Meritis
society was founded to promote
the arts and sciences. Ten years
later, its wealthy members had
this canal house specially built.
To this day it stages international
dance performances, theatre,
lectures and electronic media
events (see p100) .
Stadsschouwburg
This Neo-Renaissance
building - both of whose
predecessors burned down -
houses the city's municipal
theatre. Local groups as well as
visiting companies tread the
boards here. It's also host to the
annual Julidans (July Dance)
Festival. Regular English-language
performances take place in the
upstairs Bovenzaal. d Leidseplein

Heineken Music Hall
Amsterdam's second
biggest live music venue (the
ArenA next door, home to Ajax
football team, is the biggest).
Some distance from the centre,
but worth it to catch the likes of
Garbage or The Chemical
Brothers. d Heineken Music Hall,
