V ISITORS FLOCK TO AMSTERDAM'S EXCELLENT ZOO , but the rest of this
distinguished residential district, with its elegant villas and broad, tree-
lined streets, is often overlooked. Most of the villas appeared in the 19th
century, many of them occupied by Jews who had prospered in the diamond
industry, and the neighbourhood's strong Jewish tradition is reflected in its
numerous memorials. Plantage means plantation: this was a rural area until
the final extension of the Grachtengordel in 1638. Despite its tranquillity,
there is no shortage of places to visit and sights to see.
