During the months prior to the turn of the millennium, millions of dollars
and tens of thousands of hours of time were spent addressing the “Y2K”
issue. Until that time, programmers had designed databases and applica-
tions to handle date-years as two-digit numbers, assuming the preceding
“19” to reflect the century. This was a simple oversight in planning, but
one that had a tremendous potential to disrupt electronic data manage-
ment. After a great deal of effort and expense, the problem was resolved
in time to greet the year 2000 without significant impact, making this
