“green IT” strategies that can help improve the long-term “sustainable”
nature of the network enterprise.
Bigger Is Better
Presentation of data is a key function of technologies in use within the
enterprise. Organizations may dedicate entire rooms to multiprojector
displays, while individual desktop systems may employ multiple monitors
to provide users with the ability to cross-reference information or to view
very large data sets, as shown in Figure 14.1.
When attempting to view very large data sets, such as all of the assets
engaged in an emergency response effort or detailed geographic survey
results, a single display can be used to examine the entire data set at a low
resolution or zoom in for detailed examination of a single small subset of
the data. Some forms of data can benefit from the ability to combine the
video and graphic rendering capabilities of multiple systems to create very
large displays that provide the high-resolution examination of very large
data sets with changing focus and resolution.
I was recently able to visit the world's highest-resolution tiled display
wall at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the University
Figure 14.1 A small visualization cluster sharing the combined display area of
six monitors to form a single large display.
