Several years ago, I was fortunate enough to present at a conference in
San Francisco with sufficient spare time to travel about the wonderful
city and take in its unique character. While experiencing the city, I was
told by locals and visitors alike about the Golden Gate Bridge—how it
was planned, constructed, and maintained continuously to stand against
the elements as one of the most beautiful landmarks of a singularly fasci-
nating city. While watching the suspension towers rise from the morning
fog, I was struck by the splendor and functionality of this long-standing
monument to engineering and found myself considering the continual
effort to maintain the bridge's structure against earthquakes, storms, salt
corrosion, and the many other threats to its existence.
A few years later, while hiking in the desert north of Tucson, Arizona, I
found myself remembering the cool moist fog fondly. The stark beauty of
