• Identification of varying types of networking that may be present
I was recently contacted via instant messaging by a reader of one of my
certification-related texts. We discussed the certifications he was working

and other details that allowed a fair degree of comfort in our communica-
tion. This conversation is otherwise unremarkable save that neither of us
spoke the other's language—he speaks only Portuguese, whereas I speak
only English fluently. By avoiding colloquialisms and idiomatic terms, we
were able to hold a lengthy discourse though technology-moderated trans-
lation software that is freely available on the Internet. Using simple sen-
tence structure and reflecting information back to one another, we were
able to converse while ensuring that the translation packages were yielding
an effective avenue for communication—using the Internet as an auto-
mated “Rosetta stone” to bridge our separate languages.
