MySpace, Facebook, and blog entries are sometimes used by
employers when evaluating applicants for suitability within the organiza-
tional framework. Because of the way Web content is cached and may be
copied elsewhere, caution is appropriate when posting to such venues. It
is not always possible to take back what has been posted for online con-
sumption, because that information may have been copied, referenced, or
otherwise transferred to other locations.
Social networking may even compromise privacy through alternative
channels, such as when a third party tags a photograph with a user's iden-
tification in a way that will be visible to others. This type of cross-identity
exposure can create very negative results, as in the case of the Olympic
athlete tagged in a photograph of him performing an apparently unlawful
act. Potential for information misuse increases as social networks weaken
privacy measures through automated association processes and real-time
tracking of current location or locales recent visited.
