Case 2
Doing other things while driving (programming the navigator, using a
cell phone, selecting music) has a very negative effect on safety behav-
ior. Even experienced drivers start to neglect safety margins (driving
too close to another car or almost hitting the side of the road on a cor-
ner) and anticipate far too slow in unexpected traffic situations
(Hyman et al., 2009; Boss, 2010).
6.3 WHERE IN THE BRAIN AND THE BODY?
The actual speed in hertz is controlled by small groups of cells (the
basic ganglia). These cell groups can orchestrate the speed of a brain
area like a metronome. The basic ganglia are mostly situated in the
basic brain, especially in the brain stem. They have very long axons
spreading all over the brain, reaching almost every cortex or group of
cells.
