The part of the modern brain that gathers all feedback about a cer-
tain behavior is located in the prefrontal cortex, especially the right
inferior prefrontal cortex, a few centimeters above the right eye on the
side of the brain. The prefrontal cortex is famous for its reasoning cen-
ter, where all the behavioral planning is done.
5.9 SUMMARY
The nonconscious system is fast, holistic, and in cases where we have
previous experience, also more accurate. It takes care of our safety
management without our knowing it. The system unfortunately also
has some biases. The fact that the feedback we receive from safety
behavior is more colored by costs than by rewards teaches us that we
constantly have to invest in safety management to compensate for this.
Without this investment, we become lazy and rely too much on our

How much effort we want to invest is personal and directly related
to our standards. These standards can be influenced. Intuition or gut
feeling can be very beneficial in detecting risk, but only in situations
were we have the opportunity to gather a lot of data about safety
issues. In new situations, we cannot rely on our belly; we have to check
everything with our eyes, ears, and mind.
