In-Depth Information
Explaining rules to newcomers not only helps to improve the qual-
ity of the acceptance but also enhances the understanding of processes.
Eventually, this also leads to improved risk understanding.
The advice to a safety coach who teaches the rules to a newcomer is
to not only explain the rules but also discuss the reasons behind them.
Is the safety coach practicing this insight in the way induction is orga-
nized in his or her organization?
Tip 6: Project Priming Safety
We know that the effects of priming can last at least four hours and
that continuous priming can lead to behavioral changes. If you decide
to use the principles of priming to enhance safety in your organization,
it is wise to develop an overall master plan. Possible elements of such
master plan are listed here:
￿
A new name for the safety campaign
￿
A logo that can be used (connection to company and safety)
￿
A safety slogan
￿
A plan that covers more than one year, in which it is possible to
change the main topic from time to time (Safety first, Safety
together, Safety at home, Personal protection, Challenge me; chal-
lenge you)
￿
Each topic is launched with a kick-off session
￿
A multimedia approach with posters, billboards, flat screen instruc-
tions, pop-ups on PCs, mails, articles in the company magazine,
small films posted on You Tube and distributed via intranet
￿
A project plan in which there is attention for safety per half-day,
per week, per month, per quarter, and per year:
￿
An exposure to a safety message at least every four hours with
care taken that this exposure changes from time to time (place,
timing, form)
￿
Attention for safety in every magazine, intranet news, and so on
￿
Safety as first item in every meeting
￿
Quarterly meetings organized around complete safety
￿
A billboard with safety figures, like the Safety Index (see also
Chapter 10), OSHA rates, and so on
￿
Creation of a new safety character (for example, Safe Simon) and a
counterpart (Dangerous Danny) who visualize how to act safe (or
not) at critical moments
