TIPS FOR TRANSFER
In this third chapter on how to influence safety behavior, we focus on
the influence of the organization. First, we discuss the role of manage-
ment as representative of the organization. Second, we focus on the
function of rules and regulations in the organization and how we can
deal with them. Finally, we focus on priming, the nonconscious influ-
ence that an organization can have via a coordinated communication
of small and short messages.
9.1 THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT
The role of management in our modern society is confusing. We are pro-
grammed in a world in which the basic community was a tribe with a
tribe leader. The tribe leader acquired his position due to personal
power, in early days due to a mix of physical strength and good hunting
ability. The psychological contract was based on care: The tribe takes
care of me, and I take care of the tribe. This care guaranteed survival
