Tip 4: Tools for the Safety Buddy: Peer Group Meetings
To reinforce the role of safety buddy, it is good to organize safety
buddy meetings from time to time. During these meetings, the safety
buddies can discuss the way they are doing this task and learn from
each other. These sessions will also strengthen the image of this addi-
tional role.
Tip 5: First Time Right
If you want to train a newcomer in a specific behavior, it is easiest if
there are no previous experiences with this behavior. If you want to
learn to play tennis, it is a nightmare for a tennis instructor to adjust
your backhand if you already have played tennis some time with friends
on a courtyard. Changing behavioral patterns is much more difficult
then establishing them. So in the case of new behavior, organize this
learning in such a way that the safety buddy is present from the first
moment, and instructions can be given from the very beginning. Once
the behavior is rehearsed several times and starts to become automated,
the newcomer can start to practice herself.
Tip 6: Feedback on Safety Behavior
Although we all benefit when people in our environment behave safely,
we are reserved in giving feedback about their safety behavior. It is a
task of the safety buddy to give feedback on safety behavior in the
one-on-one situation and of the manager to discuss safety topics in the
team. Just imagine now what the effect would be if you asked your
teammates to rank themselves by standing physically in a straight line
according to their performed safety behavior. The one on the left
would have the weakest safety behavior, and the one on the right, the
strongest. Suppose you let them discuss why they were standing where
they stood and gave them the opportunity to change position to the
left or the right if they could explain why.
