7.5 THE SAFETY BUDDY AND HIS INFLUENCE ON SELF-IMAGE
TIPS FOR TRANSFER
In the next three chapters, we focus on how we can influence people to
work and live more safely. We start with the individual approach.
Analyzing the possible one-to-one relationships that might influence
safety behavior, we can distinguish three such relationships: the line
manager, the important safety models in and around the team, and
finally the special role of a personal safety coach. The role of impor-
tant safety models is discussed in Chapter 9, when we explore the deep
impact of mirror systems in which people learn from each other. In
Chapter 10, we discuss the role of the line manager and the impact of
pressure on performance. In this chapter, we focus on the
safety
buddy
, who plays a major role in creating safe behavior patterns and
in acquiring risk sensitivity and risk understanding, which can be seen
as the safety foundations within each person.
7.1 WHAT IS A SAFETY BUDDY?
If a person starts a new job, he needs to be introduced to the work: the
induction. This induction not only includes understanding the pro-
cesses and the tasks but also how work should be done. Induction is
focused on gaining competences (a mix of knowledge, skills, and expe-
rience) and attitude. The
can play a significant role in
this induction process, both in developing competences and in acquir-
ing the right attitude. Safety is a key component of both. Being a
safety buddy is not a full-time job but should be considered as an extra
safety buddy
