present in the cytoplasm in an inactivated form in complex with IkBa. Upon
receipt of the signal, specific kinases phosphorylate IkBa, which is
subsequently ubiquitinated and targeted for degradation by the 26S protea-
some. Free IkBa, which contains six ankyrin repeat domains, is extremely
