24.4.1.3 Penciclovir
Structure (Figure 24.11): 9-(4-Hydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl-but-1-yl)guanine (PCV), Denavir ® , Vectavir ® .
Activity spectrum : HSV 1, HSV-2, and VZV.
Mechanism of action : Essentially similar to that of acyclovir.
Principal indication(s) : Mucocutaneous HSV infections, particularly recurrent herpes labialis
(cold sores).
Administered : Topically as a 1% cream.
