18.4 CONCLUDINGREMARKS
DA, 5-HT, and NE receptors and transporters have shown their relevance as drug targets, and
although research toward the pharmacotherapy of schizophrenia and depression nowadays are
targeting other targets as well, future antipsychotics and antidepressants may very well interact
with these receptors and sites also. Recently, it has been shown that DA signals via several different
second messenger systems and as discussed earlier an allosteric site has been identii ed on SERT.
Only the future will tell us whether these new discoveries will result in new and effective pharma-
cotherapies based on the DA and 5-HT systems.
