Figure 5.6 The variation of CIs of the different muscle pairs for the interactive group
during the training course.
for the interactive group, mainly reflect the muscle co-ordination in voluntary
movements. Therefore, there was no CI value for the passive group during
CPM wrist movements. We found decreasing trends in CI values of BIC&TRI,
FCR&BIC, ECR&BIC, and ECR&FCR for the interactive group. It suggested the
reduction in the co-contraction of these muscle pairs. The decreasing CI value of
a muscle pair was related to (1) the reduced muscle activation level, and (2) the
reduced muscle co-contracting phase. The decreasing CIs involving BIC muscle
could be mainly due to the reduced BIC EMG activation level during the training
( Fig. 5.5 ) , since the variations of these CIs were consistent with the change in the
BIC EMG activation level. It has been often observed clinically that the wrist
movements in the paretic side in persons after stroke usually were associated with
significant motions of the adjacent joints, such as the elbow. The decrease in CI
values related to the BIC muscle also suggested a better isolation of the wrist
motions from the elbow movements through the robot-assisted wrist training.
The decrease in the CI of ECR&FCR was appeared after Session 13, which is
associated with the non-decreasing phase of the FCR EMG level after Session 13
( Fig. 5.5 ) and the oscillating phase of the overall ECR EMG level. It implied that
the decreasing in the CI of ECR&FCR after Session 13 could be mainly related to
the reduction of the co-contracting phase of the two muscles during the tracking.
It also indicated a better coordinating pattern between this antagonist muscle pair,
i.e., the contracting/relaxing pattern, when performing the wrist extension and
flexion in tracking tasks. However, this improvement in the coordinating pattern
between FCR&ECR appeared in later sessions of the training; and the decrease in
the CI of FCR&ECR did not reach a steady state before the end of the training,
