Practicing with an image
Now that you have had an opportunity to practice your Pen tool fundamentals, you will apply what you
have learned to create a mask on an image.
In this next part of the lesson, you will use the Pen tool to select an object that might be difficult to select
with the standard selection tools. You will then incorporate text and a vector shape to see how you can
take advantage of the vector tools in Photoshop.

Choose File > Open and navigate to the advps04lessons folder. Open the file named
ad-
vps0402_start.psd
; an image of a gumball machine appears.

Choose File > Save. In the Save As dialog box, type
advps0402_work
into the File name text field.
Navigate to the advps04lessons folder and make sure it is in the Photoshop format. Click Save.

Select the Zoom tool and make sure that Scrubby Zoom is turned off in the Options panel. You will
use keyboard shortcuts to zoom in and out and to navigate this image as you create the Pen path.
To create a successful Pen path, you need to be zoomed in the image. Start in the upper-left side of the
glass bowl.

With the Zoom tool selected, click and drag to zoom into the top glass area of the gumball machine.
Click and drag to zoom in to the gumball machine.
