1 With the selection of the woman still active, click the Refine Edge button in the Options bar. The
Refine Edge dialog box appears. The Refine Edge feature is available in the options of all the selec-
tion tools.
2 Press F to cycle through the different view modes that are available for you to work in while in the
Refine Edge dialog box. The backgrounds that you see, appearing behind your selection, are not per-
manent and are meant to help you better see your selection refinements.
If you want more details about each view mode, click and hold the arrow to the right of the View pre-
view. Hover over each View mode until a tool tip appears. Show Original displays the original selection
for comparison. Show Radius displays the selection border where edge refinement occurs.
Choose a view mode that will make it easier for you to see your selection refinements.
3 For this exercise, click the View drop-down menu and choose On Layers. This makes the background
transparent. If you had additional layers underneath this image, they would appear now.
4 Select the Refine Radius tool ( ).The Refine Radius tool allows you to precisely adjust the border area
in which edge refinement occurs. You will use it around her hair.
5 Notice that as you paint, the border of your selection is being refined to include the wisps of hair. The
background that is showing through the wisps of hair is also erased. Continue painting until you have
selected the fine pieces of hair. You can control the radius of the Refine Radius tool by pressing the
Left ([) and Right (]) Bracket keys.
