11 If you went too far in a selection and want to remove some of the areas you selected, press and hold
the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key and encompass the area that you want to deselect. When
pressing and holding the Alt/Option key, the minus sign appears next to the cursor (minus selection).
Alt/Option+Click and drag to deselect an area.
12 Turn your selection into a layer mask by clicking the Add layer mask button at the bottom of the
Layers panel. The popcorn box is now on a transparent layer. You will find out more about tasks you
can carry out with layer masks throughout the following lessons in this topic.

Adding and deleting using the tool Options
Using the Shift+Alt/Option key to add and subtract from a selection is a quick and easy way to keep you pro-
ductive. If you would prefer not to use shortcuts, you can use the Selection options that are available in the
Options bar of the selection tools. In the Options bar, you see four buttons, each representing the selection
mode.
A. New selection. B. Add to selection. C. Subtract from selection. D. Intersect with selection.
As a default, the Lasso tool is set to create a new selection every time you release and begin creating a new
selection. You essentially override that selection by pressing and holding the Shift+key when adding to a se-
