In-Depth Information
You can create great-looking 3D text from traditional 2D text in Photoshop, and you can combine that
text with other 3D objects, too.
1 Select the Horizontal Type tool ( ) from the Tools panel and click anywhere in the image area to type
Extruded Text . Using the Set the font family drop-down menu, in the Options panel, select a
typeface that you would like to use. Note that typefaces with thicker strokes generally work better for
extruded text.
2 With the newly created text layer selected, choose 3D > New 3D Extrusion from Selected Layer; the
text layer becomes a new 3D layer and the 3D panel has been activated. Now you will combine your
new 3D text with our other layer containing 3D objects.
3 In the Layers panel, select the Extruded Text layer and the 3D Objects layer. Choose 3D > Merge 3D
Layers to combine all 3D objects into one layer and one scene.
4 Make sure that both the Properties and the 3D panels are visible, and then click the 3D text in your
scene. Notice how the related object is highlighted in the 3D panel and the options change in the Prop-
erties panel. Now let's edit our 3D text by making sure it is selected and then clicking Edit Source in
the Properties panel.
5 A new document titled Extruded Text.psb opens. This is a temporary file that contains the source con-
tent of your 3D layer before it was extruded. Edit the text using the Text tool, changing the text from
Extruded Text to Fleur-De-Lis .
6 Choose Create Warped Text ( )from the Options panel to warp the 2D text. From the Warp Text dialog
box, choose the Arc style option and set the Bend amount to 70% and the Vertical Distortion to
-10% . Click OK, and then click and drag to reposition your text.
You can edit 3D text objects.
7 Choose File > Save and then close this temporary PSB file. You should see your 3D text updated in
your scene.
