Explore the possibilities using the Camera Raw filter for HSL/Grayscale to enhance colors of the parrot's
feathers. You can use any settings you want.
7 When you are done experimenting, click OK and choose File > Save to save your file.
Since this is a Smart Filter, you can always come back to make additional adjustments by double-
clicking the Camera Raw filter in the Layers panel.
Using the Mask in the Smart Object
Notice that the mask for the Parrots layer no longer appears in the Layers panel. However, since you con-
verted this layer for Smart Filters, you can still access the original mask.
1 Double-click the thumbnail of the Parrots in the Layers panel. If you see a dialog box about editing the
contents, click OK.
You are now in a the embedded file called Parrots.psb . This is similar to a linked file that you can
edit and update.
2 Select the Channels panel. If you do not see the Channels panel, choose Window > Channels.
3 Select the visibility icon ( ) to the left of the thumbnail for the Parrots Mask, then select the words
“Parrots Mask” to display and select the mask. When a mask is selected a default color of light red ap-
pears. This represents the area that is masked. Notice that the bottom of the image and a few other
areas are not completely masked and do not display as light red, these areas are not masked.
