In-Depth Information
files typically have filename extensions of .crw or .cr2 (for Canon cameras) or .nef (for Nikon Electronic
Format). You do not need raw images to use the Camera Raw filter.
1 Turn on the top Parrots layer by clicking the visibility icon ( ) next to the thumbnail of the parrots in
the Layers panel.
This layer has already been masked using the steps covered in Lesson 3, “Advanced Selection Tech-
niques.”
2 Click the word Parrots in the Layers panel to select the Parrots layer.
Where you click in the layers panel can make a BIG difference. For example, a common pitfall is
mistakenly clicking the mask icon (which would target the mask) that provides entirely different
results.
3 Choose Filter > Convert for Smart Filters.
If a dialog box about Smart Filters appears, click OK. You can click the Don't show again check box,
and then click OK to make the dialog box remember your choice and not appear again.
4 Choose Filter > Camera Raw Filter, the Camera Raw dialog box appears.
5 Double-click the Zoom tool at the top of the Camera Raw dialog box to change the zoom to 100%, and
then use the Hand tool to pan, or reposition the image of the parrots.
This image has already been color corrected so few adjustments are needed. However, you might want
to explore some special effects, which you will do later in this lesson.
6 Click the HSL/Grayscale icon ( ) Windows or ( ) (Mac OS) and explore the possibilities for chan-
ging the colors of the parrot's feathers using adjustments on the Hue, Saturation, and Luminance pan-
els. There are no set values that you must change in this step but keep in mind the following as you
make changes: Hue: Changes the color. Saturation: Changes the brightness of a color. For instance a
desaturated parrot would appear as a grayscale image. Luminance: Changes the lightness of an image.
When you bring down the luminance you fade the image.
You can also double-click any slider in the Camera Raw filter to reset it back to the default setting.
