In-Depth Information
Drag the slider in the Threshold panel to the left.
Shift+click the lightest part of the image.
You can press and hold the Shift key and click and drag a color sample to reposition it.
6 Note that you must click Cancel in the Threshold dialog box. If you accidently click OK, press Ctrl+Z
(Windows) or Command+Z (Mac OS) to undo the Threshold change and keep your color samples.
You can create up to four color samplers in your image at a time. Color samplers help you refer
back to an exact location in your image. You will use the color samplers to help you locate and set
the highlights and shadows in this image, as well as read other values. If you need to remove any
color sampler, you can select the Color Sampler tool ( ), which is hidden in the Eyedropper tool,
and then press and hold the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key while you click the color
sampler.
Now that you have determined where you lightest point and darkest point in the image are, you will use
them to improve the tonal values of this image.
Defining highlight and shadow
The process of defining values for the highlight (lightest) and shadow (darkest) in your image is not diffi-
cult, but it helps to know where the image will be used. If you have a good relationship with a printer,
they can tell you the white point (lightest) or black point (darkest) values that work best for their presses
and material that they will print on. Alternatively, you can use the generic values suggested in this topic.
The values shown in this example are good for typical printing setups and for screen display.
1 If your Layers panel is not visible, select Window > Layers.
2 With advps0502_work.psd open, click the Create new fill or adjustment layer button ( ) and select
Curves; the Properties panel with Curves appears.
3 Double-click the Sample in image to set the white point button ( ) found on the left side of the Curves
Adjustments panel; the Color Picker (Target Highlight Color) dialog box appears. Even though you
are in the RGB mode, you can set values in any of the color environments displayed in this window.
In this example, you'll use CMYK values.
