Design for serviceability of
prestressed concrete
Viaduct at Gruyère, Switzerland
12.1 Introduction
Prestressed concrete structures commonly contain non-prestressed
reinforcement to control cracks that develop before introduction of the
prestressing or when the structure is in service. The appropriate design of
the non-prestressed reinforcement and the prestressing forces can control
de
ections and limit the opening of cracks. This chapter 1 discusses the choice
of the level of prestressing forces and the amount of non-prestressed
reinforcement to achieve these objectives.
