One popular Israeli beverage is a tangy drink called limonana , a refreshing combination
of lemonade and mint leaves ( nana means “mint” in Hebrew). Alcoholic beverages are also
drunk. Israel is a leading producer of commercial and boutique kosher wines. Beginning in
the 1990s or so, Israel's wine industry expanded dramatically, with many new boutique labels
starting up in places like the Jerusalem Hills and quickly meeting high standards.
Consumption of beer and spirits — and alcohol in general— is low among Israelis in com-
parison with consumption in other Western countries. The average Israeli is estimated to con-
sume about 4.5 gallons of beer per year at most, compared to 26 gallons for the average Ameri-
can. Israel produces two commercial beers, Goldstar and Maccabee, but many prefer foreign
imports. Local microbreweries also offer other beer alternatives.
