Tinkercad
Tinkercad is an easy to use web-based 3D modeler that allows you to build
models quickly using a variety of geometric shapes and “holes” for subtract-
ing geometries. It also has the ability to import STL and SVG files to create
mashups. Tinkercad also recently added a Shape Scripts API integrated di-
rectly into the Tinkercad editor that uses Javascript to generate geometries.
Tinkercad allows you to download an STL of your model for desktop fabrica-
tion and also has partnerships with a several 3D printing services: Shape-
ways, i.materialize, Ponoko and sculpteo. You can even upload models cre-
ated in Tinkercad directly to Thingiverse. You can access Tinkercad from
https://tinkercad.com .
To get quickly get acquainted with Tinkercad, go through the
built in lessons located under the Learn tab in the top toolbar.
Some tips to keep in mind before we get started with the tutorial:
• To scale length and width, click on an object in Tinkercad, which selects
the object and allows you to manipulate its length, width, and height
properties by dragging the handles (white squares) that border the se-
lected shape.
• To scale proportionally, hold down the shift key while dragging the corner
of a selected shape.
• To see shape's dimensions, hover over a shape handle (white box).
• Use the cube icon under the navigation arrows to zoom in on a selected
shape.
• The triangle marker indicates how far off the workplace an object is.
• The traditional hot keys for copy, paste and undo work in Tinkercad.
There are also a number of keyboard and mouse shortcuts to help
you work faster ( http://tinkercad.tenderapp.com/kb/getting-started/
keyboard-and-mouse-shortcuts ) .
• You can place a Workplane directly onto geometries by dragging them
to the work area and positioning them on your model. This enables you
to add and position geometries are perpendicular with slanted and
round surfaces, such as spheres and pyramids.
Next, we will create a classic button with four holes and a concave center.
