Disconnect from a Wi-Fi network
If you accidentally join the wrong network, it's easy to sever the connec-
tion. In Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the detail button (
) and then tap Forget
this Network.
Turn off Wi-Fi
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and set the Wi-Fi switch to Off. You may want to
do this when conserving battery power or if you're in an area where you
know a Wi-Fi network isn't available.
Use a Cellular Data Network with a Wi-Fi iPad
Instead of purchasing an iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G, some people are
employing a different technique to provide ubiquitous Internet
access.
The Novatel Wireless MiFi ( www.novatelwireless.com) and Sprint's
Overdrive ( www.sprint.com/overdrive) are portable Wi-Fi hotspots
that connect to a cellular data network. They're both pocket-sized
and offer the same type of always-on connection that the iPad 3G
provides. However, they're not bound to one carrier, and they can let
more than one device connect at a time.
The monthly service costs more than the iPad 3G's setup, but you're
not tied to Apple's preferred carriers. If you need to connect several
devices over Wi-Fi (like the iPad, an iPhone, and a laptop), or you
can't get good reception using your cellular provider, something like
the MiFi may be perfect.
If you already own an iPhone 4, another option is available. For a
monthly fee to your cellular service provider, you can set up the
iPhone as a portable hotspot, connecting up to five devices via Wi-Fi,
Bluetooth, and USB.
