In-Depth Information
note The iPad automatically goes to sleep after five minutes of inactivity to
conserve battery power. You can change that amount in the Settings
app by tapping General, then Auto-Lock, and tapping a time duration (1 to 5
minutes, or Never if you want to always put the iPad to sleep manually).
To wake the iPad, press the power button or the Home button and then
use the Slide to Unlock control.
Sleep and wake using a Smart Cover
Apple's Smart Covers were designed alongside the iPad
. They inter-
act with magnets built into the iPad's case to align the cover and also
provide a nifty sleep/wake feature. Open the Smart Cover to wake the
iPad, or close the cover to put the iPad to sleep. (This feature is also avail-
able in cases, made by other companies, that interact with the magnets
in the same way.)
2
You can disable this behavior by going to the Settings app, tapping
General, and then turning off the iPad Cover Lock/Unlock option.
Power off
It's rare that I turn off the iPad completely —usually only when some-
thing seems to be wrong and I want to restart it, or if I know I won't be
using it for an extended period of time (like that's realistic). To do so,
press and hold the power button until the red Slide to Power Off control
appears. Slide it to turn off the power.
To prevent just anyone from unlocking your iPad and accessing your
data, specify a four-digit passcode that must be entered first. See
Chapter 11 for more information.
