Atchafalaya River begins (Fig. 7 ). Although the exact timing of this Red River
avulsion is controversial (Pearson 1986 ), approximately AD 1800 the Red River
avulsed again flowing northeast through Moncla Gap, and reoccupied segments of
Meander Belts 2 and 3 to join the Mississippi River at Turnbull Bend (Fig. 8 ;
Aslan et al. 2005 ).
