having to implement patch releases and maintain in-house code and
hardware infrastructure. If the system scales and has good security it is
hard to argue that this would not be a boon for both companies and
academic institutions. One common gripe of hosted solutions is the lack
of direct control; for example what if you wanted to run your own
algorithms on the data sets? A solution to this complaint is to build an
easy to use yet comprehensive enough API to allow bioinformaticians
and biostatisticians access to the data sets and annotations so that they
can run these algorithms on the data sets in the cloud. We think that such
a hosted solution is not only possible but is coming in the not-too-distant
future.
