This diagram, in conjunction with experimental data from the viticul-
ture advisor on different rootstock varieties, is not meant to cut through
the contingencies of place but to account for them, to make them the
central factor in a decision. Of course, the diagram could potentially be
even more complicated if it also had to represent the multitude of other
factors that link the local ecology of a place to larger-scale aspects of its
political economy, including the cost of different rootstocks, market condi-
tions for certain types of wines, the availability of pest controls, and so on.
Adding these considerations would greatly expand the diagram's size and
