to create a still image to be used as a title or some other element within a video. In general, most Adobe
programs work extremely well with the native PSD format and require no conversion.
When importing into a non-Adobe video application, you might need to consider the support for the PSD
file format and for other properties, such as transparency. Each video application has its own set of rules,
and you should check with the software manufacturer for details. For this lesson, you will open a pre-built
file and save it as a TIFF with an alpha channel. Most video editing applications recognize alpha channels
when defining transparent areas on an image.
1 Open the file ps1302.psd . The image that appears will be used as a transparent overlay in a video.

2 If the Layers panel is not visible, choose Window > Layers to open the Layers panel.
3 Position your cursor over the layer thumbnail for the Shape 1 layer. Press and hold the Ctrl (Windows)
or Command (Mac OS) key and click; this makes an active selection of the shape.
4 Press and hold the Ctrl+Shift (Windows) or Command+Shift (Mac OS) keys, and click the layer thumb-
nail for the layer called balloon. This adds the balloon layer to the selection.
Ctrl/Command+click the Shape 1 thumbnail to make a selection from a layer's contents.
5 If the Channels panel is not visible, choose Window > Channels to open the Channels panel.
6 Click the Save Selection as channel button ( ) at the bottom of the Channels panel. This creates an al-
pha channel from the active selection.
