Creating a layer mask
You just created the first layer in this document. It is important to keep your layers organized as you work;
the Layers panel can become cumbersome when additional layers are created without being properly
named.
1 Double-click the word Layer 1 in the Layers panel. When the Layer 1 text becomes highlighted, type
boy .
Now you'll select the boy and create a layer mask to cover the background sky.
2 Select the boy layer in the Layers panel to make sure it is the active layer, and then select the Quick
Selection tool ( ). With the Quick Selection tool, start brushing over the image of the boy. A selection
is created as you brush. If you accidently select the area outside the jumping boy, press and hold the Alt
(Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key and brush over that area again to delete it from the selection.
Because you will be turning your selection into a mask, you do not have to be precise. You can edit the
selection later if necessary.
Create a selection using the Quick Selection tool.
3 With the selection still active, select the Add Layer Mask button ( ) at the bottom of the Layers panel.
A mask is created, revealing only your selection of the jumping boy.
