In-Depth Information
Change the unit of measurement to Inches.
2 This lesson uses inches as the unit of measure. To make sure that you have the ruler set for inches, right-
click (Windows) or Ctrl+click (Mac OS) the ruler that appears at the top of the image area, and then se-
lect inches from the context menu that appears. You can also change your measurement rules by select-
ing Edit > Preferences > Units and Rulers (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > Units and Rulers,
and then select Inches from the Rulers drop-down menu.
Converting the Background into a layer
Just as with many other advanced features in Photoshop, you need to convert the Background into a layer
to take advantage of the content-aware scale feature.
1 If the Layers panel is not open, choose Window > Layers to show it now. You see the Background.
2 Press and hold the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key, and then double-click the word Background
in the Layers panel; Background is converted into Layer 0.
Protecting the teacher
You will now use the Quick Selection tool to make a selection of the teacher and then save that selection.
This saved selection will be used later in this lesson to keep her from being affected by the scale.
1 Select the Quick Selection tool ( ) and start painting directly on the teacher in the image; this starts to
create a selection. You can continue to paint on the teacher until she is entirely selected. If you acci-
dently select outside the teacher, press and hold the Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) key. Keep in
mind that you are not creating a silhouette from this selection, so it does not have to be perfect.
