Creating extra image area with the content-aware scale tool
The content-aware scale feature is quite handy when you need a bit more image area. Using this feature,
you can realistically expand pixels in your image; you can also use it to protect areas of the image that
have skin tone or are designated as being protected with the use of a saved selection. In this part of the les-
son, you will open an image that needs to be expanded by approximately one inch. You will protect a part
of the image first, using channels.
Opening the file
1 Choose File > Browse in Bridge. When Adobe Bridge is forward, navigate to the ps07lessons folder that
you copied onto your hard drive.
2 Locate the image named ps0701.psd and double-click it to open it in Photoshop. You can also choose to
right-click (Windows) or Ctrl+click (Mac OS), and when the shortcut menu appears, select Open with
Adobe Photoshop CC. An image of a teacher in front of a chalkboard appears.
This image will be expanded on the right side to increase the image area.
3 Choose File > Save As. The Save As dialog box appears. Navigate to the ps07lessons folder. In the File
name text field, type ps0701_work , choose Photoshop from the Format drop-down menu, and click
Save. Leave the image open.
Viewing the on-screen ruler
Turn on the on-screen ruler before beginning this project. This will help you expand the image to the right
amount later in this lesson.
1 Press Ctrl+R (Windows) or Command+R (Mac OS) to turn on the rulers. You can also choose View >
Rulers from the menu bar.
Keep in mind that this is a toggle menu item, meaning that if a check mark is on the left of Ruler you
already have them visible, and by selecting Ruler again, they go away.
