COMPONENTS OF DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS
Figure 5.1 shows the components of a DSS instantiation and those factors affecting both DSS
instantiation and decision making. A DSS integrates decision maker and information technology
into a synergistic unit to improve decision making. The decision maker and information technol-
ogy combine to address a specific task within an organization and its environment. The interplay
among decision maker, task, and information technology is the DSS and is a well-known triad in
the information systems and technology literatures (Mason and Mitroff, 1973; Newell and Simon,
