about the field. If HCI courses taught within business schools are difficult to find, then the
chances that students and/or organizational members may learn about them decreases and this
ultimately reduces the number of potential organizations able to apply HCI principles and
research findings.
Table 3.2 lists about 150 undergraduate HCI courses that we identified through our search and
Table 3.3 summarizes our findings by school and country. As these tables demonstrate, almost half
of the HCI courses take place in computer science departments, with the remaining portion being
offered in a wide variety of other areas, including engineering and psychology. In addition to
department-level HCI courses, a few universities have created HCI institutes that are not tied to
particular faculties or schools—such as Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute.
These institutes tend to cross the disciplines of computer science and psychology.
These results suggest that HCI remains on the periphery of MIS teaching. This may result in a fail-
ure to reach all individuals who may potentially benefit from HCI training. Computer science cur-
rently dominates HCI education, and while this may be helpful to computer science professionals, it
