Located 40-60 minutes south of Walt Disney World is the Disney Wilderness
Preserve, a wetlands-restoration area operated by The Nature Conservancy in part-
nership with Disney. There are hiking trails, an interpretive center, and guided outings
on weekends. Trails wind through grassy savannas, beneath ancient cypress trees,
and along the banks of pristine Lake Russell. The preserve is open Sunday-Friday, 9
a.m.-5 p.m.; closed on most holidays. Admission is free, though donations are appre-
ciated. Reservations are highly recommended. If you're interested, call the preserve
directly at 407-935-0002 or visit tinyurl.com/disneywildernesspreserve .
GOLF
IF GOLF IS YOUR THING , call 407-938-GOLF (4653) or visit golfwdw.com for in-
formation, tee times, and greens fees at Palm Golf Course (
), Magnolia Golf
Course (
), Lake Buena Vista Golf Course ( ), or Oak Trail Golf Course (
).
There is, of course, golf beyond Mickey's Kingdom. The greater Orlando area
has enough high-quality courses to rival better-known golfing meccas, such as Scott-
sdale and Palm Springs. But unlike these destinations with their endless private coun-
try clubs, Orlando is unique because almost all its courses are open for some sort of
public play. We compiled a list of off-Disney golf courses for Dad's or Mom's special
day off (see the chart above).
